The member organizations of the Black Leadership Forum encourage Congress to enact strong health reform legislation that includes a “ROBUST PUBLIC OPTION LIKE MEDICARE.”
 
According to the National Urban League’s The State of Black America and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies:
 

• Black people have the highest mortality rate in America
• The AIDS rate for African Americans is 10 times that of Whites
• African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than White women

 
Access to an option for government-issued health care will provide competition for private health providers, lower costs and help to close this healthcare gap.
 
REMIND CONGRESS THAT A “ROBUST PUBLIC OPTION LIKE MEDICARE” IS IMPORTANT TO ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY FOR NOT ONLY AFRICAN AMERICANS, BUT ALLAMERICANS.
 
WE MUST FLOOD CONGRESS WITH VISITS, EMAILS, TELEPHONE CALLS, FAXES AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO MAKE OUR POINT CLEAR: WE NEED A ROBUST PUBLIC OPTION LIKE MEDICARE!”
